Fujifilm X-E1 - Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages of Fujifilm X-E1:

  • Advantages of Fujifilm X-E1:
  • Significantly cheaper than the flagship Fuji X-Pro1 system camera, but has many of the same features
  • Overall image quality is excellent, with very clean and sharp JPEGs
  • Maximum detail and resolution from the 16.3 MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS sensor due to the absence of a low-pass filter
  • Very low moire rate, despite the absence of an anti-aliasing filter
  • Excellent performance when shooting in low light conditions at high ISO; Clear photos up to ISO 6400
  • Very good dynamic range
  • Color accuracy
  • Separate adjustment of light and dark tones
  • Bracketing for many functions, not just exposure and white balance
  • Sleek body design that combines the look of a rangefinder film camera with the advanced features of a modern mirrorless camera
  • Lightweight and portable
  • Top-notch image quality that surpasses most entry-level APS-C sensor DSLRs
  • Surprisingly good shooting results with the XF18-55mm (27-84mm equivalent) F/2.8-4 OIS kit lens; excellent clarity and good bokeh at F/2.8 aperture
  • Very fast shutter speed if you focus first
  • In continuous shooting mode, frame rate is 6 fps
  • Clear and easy menu system
  • Logical control layout and elegant design
  • Decent electronic viewfinder (EVF) with good resolution
  • Electronic level
  • A fun and useful film simulation mode that can be used for video shooting
  • Connector for connecting an external stereo microphone.

Disadvantages of Fujifilm X-E1:

  • Limited selection of X-mount lenses
  • Not too grippy handle
  • Uncertain feeling when pressing the shutter button halfway
  • Average autofocus speed
  • Slowly wakes up from sleep mode
  • ISO, Film Simulation and Dynamic Range Bracketing Disables RAW
  • Auto white balance is too red indoors and too yellow in incandescent mode
  • Saturation adjustment is not very effective
  • No RAW support at extended ISOs (100, 12800, 25600)
  • Weak built-in flash, some scenes with a reddish tint
  • No dedicated buttons for ISO or video
  • Compensation range is only +/- 2 EV
  • Slow buffer clearing with RAW images
  • The included lens does not focus very close
  • LCD screen size and resolution are smaller than competitors
  • LCD screen glares in bright light
  • Video recording is still limited to 24p
  • Video quality with the electronic shutter (rolling shutter effect) is not impressive
  • More bulky than other APS-C system cameras.

Photos taken from the X-E1 look excellent, with high resolution and detail (due in part to the lack of an optical low-pass filter). And thanks to X-Trans sensor technology, moire is minimal. The included XF 18-55mm F/2.8-4 lens is the first zoom for Fuji X-series interchangeable lens cameras. It produces images with stunning clarity and professional-looking background blur (bokeh), which is great for portraits. The X-E1 stands out well against its competitors in low light and high ISO settings (especially in the 1600 to 3200 range).
