GTX 1080 / GTX 1080 Ti - Common Breakdowns and Causes

1. 🔥 VRM (power module) failure

  • Symptoms: the video card does not turn on, black screen, fans twitch or do not start
  • Causes: overheating, weak power phases, unstable power supply from the PSU, overclocking
  • Solution: replace damaged MOSFETs, chokes, drivers, check the PWM controller

2. 🌡️ Video memory overheating (GDDR5X)

  • Symptoms: artifacts, ripples on the image, game crashes, blue screens
  • Causes: insufficient contact with the radiator, old thermal pad, factory overheating
  • Solution: replace thermal pads, check the temperature via HWInfo, possibly - chip reballing

3. 💀 Graphics processor (GPU) failure

  • Symptoms: complete black screen, PC does not start, fans spin, but no video signal
  • Causes: overheating, mechanical damage to the board, manufacturing defect
  • Solution: diagnostics with a multimeter and oscilloscope, possible reballing/replacing the GPU (GP104/GP102)

4. 🔌 Problems with PCIe lines

  • Symptoms: the card is detected with errors, does not work in x16, BIOS freezes
  • Causes: damage to tracks, poor soldering or overheating of the PCIe zone
  • Solution: checking signal circuits, restoring tracks, reballing controllers

5. ⚡ Failure of HDMI / DisplayPort outputs

  • Symptoms: no image from a certain output, only one port works
  • Causes: damage to switching chips, overheating or peak voltage
  • Solution: checking lines using diagrams, replacing the controller/ESD protection

6. ❄️ Cooling problems

  • Symptoms: the card is noisy, overheats, throttles, fans are not regulated
  • Reasons: fan wear, thermal paste degradation, BIOS errors
  • Solution: fan replacement, BIOS update, cooling system maintenance

7. 🧠 BIOS errors or reflashing

  • Symptoms: black screen after update, incorrect frequencies
  • Reasons: installing an inappropriate VBIOS, firmware failure
  • Solution: recovery via programmer (CH341A) or "blind" firmware

Monitor the temperature: GPU < 80°C, VRAM < 85°C

Use high-quality PSUs with protection (OVP, OCP)

Do not set unstable overclocks

Clean the video card from dust every 6-12 months

Change thermal paste and thermal pads every 2-3 years
