RTX 2080, RTX 2080Ti, RTX 2080Super. Common Problems

🔧 1. Overheating

Symptoms:

Fan noise

Throttling (frequency reduction)

Artifacts, freezes, game crashes

Causes:

Clogged radiator

Old or bad thermal paste

VRM or GDDR6 memory overheating

Insufficient case ventilation

Solutions:

  • Replacing thermal paste and thermal pads
  • Cleaning the cooler
  • Adding case fans

⚡ 2. VRAM (video memory) failure

Symptoms:

Artifacts on the screen

Green squares, flickering

Blue screens when starting games

Causes:

Overheating or degradation of memory chips

Soldering defects (especially for 2080 Ti early batch)

Damage after overclocking or stress

Solutions:

  • Memory diagnostics (e.g. Memtest CUDA or OCCT VRAM)
  • Repair / reballing / replacing chips in a workshop

💥 3. Problems with power supply circuits (VRM)

Symptoms:

Does not turn on / cuts off under load

Monitor flickering

Driver errors "Driver stopped responding"

Causes:

Failure of MOSFET, chokes, power controller

BIOS modifications and extreme overclocking

Insufficient or low-quality power supply

Solutions:

  • Voltage measurement, VRM diagnostics
  • Replace damaged components
  • Use a high-quality PSU (minimum 600-650 W)

🧠 4. Problems with BIOS / firmware

Symptoms:

Black screen at startup

Incorrect display of frequencies

Not detected system

Causes:

Incorrect firmware (especially when cross-flashing between models)

Removing protection in PowerLimit

Incorrect modified BIOS

Solutions:

  • Reflashing the original BIOS via NVFlash
  • Using a spare BIOS (if the card has Dual BIOS)

🔌 5. Mechanical or factory defects (especially RTX 2080 Ti)

Symptoms:

GPU death after 3-6 months

Track breaks, microcracks in soldering

GPUs are not detected even in POST

Causes:

Overheating of the TU102 GPU in early batches of RTX 2080 Ti Founders Edition

Poor memory and power cooling

Impacts, board bends

Solutions:

  • Repairing the GPU soldering (reballing)
  • Replacing with a more stable version from AIB
  • Checking under microscope

🧪 6. Instability after mining

Symptoms:

Elevated temperatures

Low stability under load

Throttling even in simple tasks

Causes:

Memory and VRM wear

BIOS protective limits removed

Weak cooler after long mining

Solutions:

  • Checking the condition of all components
  • Replacing the cooling
  • Stock BIOS flashing
