RTX 4090 Common Problems

1. 🔌 Problems with the 12VHPWR (12+4) power connector

The most common and dangerous malfunction is overheating and melting of the connector or cable.

The reason is a loose connection, cheap adapters or weak cable fastening.

It was especially often detected on early batches of RTX 4090.

🛑 The following brands suffered:

ZOTAC - one of the first known cases with a melted connector.

Gigabyte - there were cases of poor soldering of adapters.

MSI - fewer incidents, but they also occurred when using the supplied cable.

 

2. 🌡️ Overheating of video memory and VRM

On some models, poor contact between thermal pads and memory chips (especially in VRAM zones).

Leads to throttling, reduced frequencies and crashes under load.

🔥 Often from brands:

Palit, Gainward, Colorful — budget options, where they often save on thermal pads.

ZOTAC Trinity — complaints about poor clamping force of radiators.

 

3. 🧩 Noise and vibration

Some coolers make noise at high speeds, or there is vibration of the cooler at startup.

🔊 Features:

Gigabyte WindForce — there were complaints about unbalanced fans.

INNO3D X3 — noise at high temperatures, slight curvature of revolutions.

 

4. 🧱 BIOS and compatibility issues

Some cards do not start on certain motherboards (especially older generations).

Problems with PCIe 4.0/5.0 modes, or with early BIOS revisions.

ASUS Series: ROG Strix, TUF Gaming

Excellent build quality, powerful cooling, well-thought-out soldering and gaskets.

 

MSI Series: Suprim X, Gaming X Trio

One of the most reliable coolers, high-quality PCB and good thermal protection.

 

Gigabyte Series: AORUS Master

Confident cooling and components, but in some cases - complaints about noise or adapters.

 

PNY Strict reference, reliable boards, but simple cooling. Reliability is above average.

 

EVGA (before leaving the market) Previously considered one of the best, especially in terms of soldering quality and warranty service.
